Sweet contemporary Christian love stories with an international twist

The Miracle of Mistletoe by Emily Dana Botrous

Happy new year! The last novel I read in 2020 was a heart-stirring second chance romance by Emily Dana Botrous. The Miracle of Mistletoe is a Christian second chance romance involving a married couple, Colt and Marcy. They eloped after a whirlwind romance but now their past hurts, secret pain, and trauma have raised a barrier between them and their marriage is in serious trouble.

Emily has woven a wonderful and moving tale about how this couple has to learn to trust in each other and in God and not allow the wounds of their past to tear them apart.

The Miracle of Mistletoe isn’t a light and fluffy read. It goes deep and the couple has to deal with some stuff, and that’s exactly the kind of romance I enjoy best. Emily Dana Botrous is definitely among my favorite contemporary Christian romance authors.

This was exactly the kind of project Gunnar loved.

But could he really work with the crazy cat lady? For his friends’ sake, he’d make an effort to put aside his personal feelings and help Johanna. If he failed to work with her, it wouldn’t be his fault.

“Fine. Tell her to call the office and make an appointment.”

Classic fiction by female authors: which ones have Classic fiction by female authors: which ones have you read?

Jane Austen is at the top of my list, of course, but I've also read and enjoyed books by Elizabeth Gaskell, Maria Edgeworth, Louisa May Alcott, George Eliot (the pen name of Mary Ann Evans), Charlotte Bronte, Ann Bronte, and Frances Hodgson Burnett. I could add a ton more if I included writers such as Grace Livingston Hill and LM Montgomery whose work was published in the early 20th century, but I'm not sure whether those count as classics!

Would you rather read a book with an ambiguous end Would you rather read a book with an ambiguous ending that leaves you wondering what the author meant, or read a book with a tragic ending?

I like stories to have a crystal clear finale in which all the good guys live happily ever after. 😁 But, failing that, I'll settle for an ambigous ending onto which I can project my own thoughts. I don't like sad endings!

How about you?

Romance that follows the same couple over multiple Romance that follows the same couple over multiple books: yes or no?

This isn’t the norm, but some romance stories don’t end with the lead couple getting their happily ever after in just one book. They follow the couple through a longer journey across two or more books before the lovebirds finally get to settle down.

Do you like these kinds of stories, or would you rather read the more traditional type of romance?

Do you ever read book or movie spoilers? I do. Pa Do you ever read book or movie spoilers? I do.

Particularly for movies, I need to know that it's going to have the "right" ending before I invest my time in it. 😁

And I look for book spoilers, too, either checking reviews or flipping to the last page to check that all ends well and the story arrives at a good destination. If it does, I can sit back and enjoy the journey. I know it's controversial, especially since I'm a writer and try to throw surprises into my stories, but I like what I like. 😆

Do you like spoilers, or do they ruin the story for you?

Mr. Darcy or Capt. Wentworth? Any Jane Austen fan Mr. Darcy or Capt. Wentworth?

Any Jane Austen fans? Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion are my favourite books of hers, probably because they have the best male leads, in my humble opinion.

I can’t decide, though, whom I like better: Fitzwilliam Darcy or Frederick Wentworth. Mr. Darcy would have been the obvious choice, but then Captain Wentworth wrote That Letter, which is the most epic declaration of love ever written. 😍

But on the other hand, Mr. Darcy showed his love through action—going above and beyond for Elizabeth with deeds that he thought she’d never find out about. 🤩

Which Austen hero is your favourite?

Have you read the books that were bestsellers in t Have you read the books that were bestsellers in the year of your birth?

I found an article yesterday that listed the bestselling books of 1974. It was interesting to see which ones are still popular and which seem to have been long forgotten.

Of the bestsellers of 1974, I’ve read Watership Down by Richard Adams, All Things Bright and Beautiful by James Herriot, Asterix and Caesar’s Gift by Rene Goscinny, and The Road to Yesterday by L.M. Montgomery.

If you run a search on Goodreads, you could find the bestseller of your birth year, too. How many have you read?
