Friends to more or enemies to love? Which kind of Friends to more or enemies to love? Which kind of love story do you prefer? I waver between which I like reading best. I might give a different answer depending on which day you ask me! 😆

I’ve written both, and I found it much more difficult to craft a story where two people have known and liked each other for a while and spent lots of time together without that spark of love developing. It’s a challenge I definitely want to take on again!

Which type of story do you prefer reading (or writing!)?

It’s officially the first day of spring in the n It’s officially the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. Or the first day of autumn if you’re south of the equator. Does the weather where you are know what the calendar says?

It’s warming up a bit here in the UK, and the daffodils are blooming.

Spring is actually my favourite season of the year because it means winter is losing its grip (or will be soon!) and summer is on the way. 😊

What do you like most about this season?

Did you ever have to pay a late fee for returning Did you ever have to pay a late fee for returning an overdue library book?

I have, more times than I care to count. Boy, does it sting! 😭 You’d think I’d learn my lesson the first time it happened, but sadly no! These days I set a date on my calendar with alarm bells and loud beeping to remind me to renew my library loans or make a trip to return the books. ⏰

What about you? Have you ever been hit with a late fee for a library book?

We’re blessed to have three public libraries within easy distance to where we live. Granted, the closest one is small and only opens three days a week and is under constant threat of being shut down. But it’s still hanging on and we like to go there when we can.

What about you?

I have to admit I’m not very patient with books I have to admit I’m not very patient with books that get off to a slow start. I make an exception for literature that’s over 50 or so years old, but when I open the first page of a story, I want to be hooked straight away. I’m blogging over at InspyRomance.com today about my favourite opening chapters in contemporary Christian romance books. Stop on by at @inspyromance and take a look!

Also, it’s the last day of the InspyRomance birthday bash, so today is the last chance to enter the draw to win one of 16 fabulous prize bundles.

We haven’t forgotten our non-US readers--everyone has a chance to win something. 😊

a) Live in your favourite book, but the main character hates you

b) Have your favourite character exist for real, but they’re very annoying once you get to know them.

I would find it hard to cope with my favourite fictional character hating me, so I'd have to go with B. 😅 What about you?

Do you like to read retellings? Retellings are a Do you like to read retellings?

Retellings are a huge thing. I can’t begin to count the number of novels I’ve read or movies I’ve seen that are a retelling of earlier books, fairy tales, or short stories. There are entire book subgenres devoted to retellings of Jane Austen’s novels.

I think the best retellings are those you can barely tell are a retelling at all, such as The Lion King, which is loosely based on Hamlet.

Do you enjoy books or movies that are based on retellings? Can you think of some you particularly liked?

Do you ever re-read books? It's always a pleasure Do you ever re-read books?

It's always a pleasure to go back and read my favourite books, reliving all the emotions, savouring the best passages, and reconnecting with characters who feel like old friends.

A treasured book is like a comfy old blanket or a go-to meal from my favourite restaurant. I know exactly what I’m getting and it doesn’t matter if it’s the second or the tenth time I’m eating it.

Is it the same for you? Or are you a one and done type of reader?

Have you ever read a series of novels from start t Have you ever read a series of novels from start to finish?

I’ve read all the Left Behind books, the full Chronicles of Narnia, and the main titles in the Green Ember series. I’ve also read all three books in @emilydanabotrous_author’s Scripted Love series. And Francine River’s Mark of the Lion trilogy because, come on, after reading the first one there’s no way you’re not going to read the rest!

I’ll probably remember more series I’ve read in full as soon as I hit “post,” 😅 but these are the ones that spring to mind.

There are also many, many series of which I’ve read some books and hope to read the rest.

What about you? Which book series have you read in full, or do you intend to read in full?

Have you ever stayed up all night to read a book? Have you ever stayed up all night to read a book? I have, more times than I can count! The last time was a couple of weeks ago. I sacrificed a night’s sleep sucked into Book 2 of Robert Jordan’s the Wheel of Time. 😴 And I’ve also lost zzz’s reading @candace.west.posey.10 Candace West’s Through the Lettered Veil. Some stories are just too good to put down until they’re over! 😁

What about you? Do you remember staying up way too late reading? Which book was the culprit?

What’s the longest book you’ve ever read? I no What’s the longest book you’ve ever read? I normally measure books by word count, since page count depends on the size of the physical book.

The longest book I’ve read is also one of my favourites: The Lord of the Rings. Often published in three volumes, it’s about 670,000 words long, or over 63 hours in audiobook form. That’s the combined length of 14 of my own books! 🤯

I’ve also read Atlas Shrugged, which is slightly shorter than the Lord of the Rings.

What about you? What’s the longest book you’ve ever read? Do you measure the length in pages, word count, or number of audiobook hours?

Do you prefer books to be written in first or thir Do you prefer books to be written in first or third person?

In case you’re not obsessed with grammar, first person is “I did this and she said that” and third person is “She did this and she said that.” So, with first person the story is written as though the character herself is telling it, while with third person, you’re looking on as the story happens.

Many people have very strong feelings about which point of view they prefer, to the extent that some readers won’t touch a book that’s not written in their preferred style. And some authors will write exclusively in their chosen point of view.

I’ll stick my neck out and confess that I much prefer third person, although I have dabbled in writing first person scenes as exercises and while outlining my stories.

And I do read first person books, although I take slightly longer to get into the story, especially if I can’t relate to the character.

There. I’ve gone and alienated half the writing and reading population. 🤣 Which point of view do you prefer? First or third?

It’s Friday the 13th today. Are you superstitiou It’s Friday the 13th today. Are you superstitious?

I remember as a child picking my way along the pavement, convinced that if I stepped on a crack or a line, it would cause my mother a painful injury. “Step on a crack, break your mother’s back,” my schoolmates used to chant.

Staring at the ground as I walked sometimes brought other benefits, like spotting a copper coin I might otherwise have missed. Because we’d also say, “Find a penny, pick it up, all day long you’ll have good luck.”

But our biggest superstition was probably about Friday the 13th. A pop quiz? Tripping in the lunchroom and falling flat on your face in front of everyone? Throwing up all over your desk? Anything could happen on this “unlucky” day.

Since becoming a Christian, though, I’ve learned that “luck” doesn’t exist. My wellbeing isn’t influenced by rituals such as what to do when I spill salt or sneeze. Because God is in complete control. Even when terrible things happen, I learned that God has a plan and can work in all circumstances for our ultimate good, if we trust him.

People who are against belief in God often lump Christian faith and superstition together. But the two are very different. Superstition means believing that specific actions have the power to influence whether we’ll have good or bad luck. But Christian faith means trusting that God is sovereign over all, and not even Christian-looking rituals can manipulate him. Wearing a cross, attending services, and doing other pious acts don’t in themselves have any power. We’re saved and blessed not because of anything we do, but because of who we are in Christ and what he has already done for us—by his grace.

Do you have any common superstitions where you live or where you grew up?
